Women's Mock Neck Sweater

A mock neck sweater carries a short collar, usually somewhere around one and a half to two inches tall, knitted to stand upright on its own rather than fold over. A turtleneck uses the same ribbed knit at roughly five to nine inches, doubled back on itself. A mock neck stops well short of that height and stays a single layer the whole way around.

That shorter, single layer changes how the sweater feels rather than just how it looks. A turtleneck's folded collar presses doubled fabric against the jaw and the underside of the chin, which some people find warm and others find close to unbearable by midafternoon. A mock neck still traps heat at the throat, since any closed collar does, but it stops below the jawline, so the fabric never touches the most sensitive part of the neck.

Height is exactly what makes it kinder to a short neck than a turtleneck is. A tall folded collar shortens an already short neck further, while a mock neck's two inches barely register against the same proportions. Against a V-neck sweater, a mock neck closes the throat entirely rather than opening it, which is the opposite design choice for a different kind of cold day.

Cold offices, layering under a blazer, and anyone who finds a full turtleneck too warm or too tight at the throat all suit a mock neck well. Long necks lose some of the style's advantage, since there is less neck left bare to lengthen, though it still reads cleanly under a coat. Anyone who dislikes any pressure at all around the throat should try one on before buying, since even a short standing collar sits snugger than an open neckline does.

Fit the collar itself before anything else: it should sit close without leaving a red mark after ten minutes, since ribbing that is knitted too tight will not loosen with wear. Fiber diameter matters here nearly as much as it does on a turtleneck, so finer merino avoids the itch a coarser wool causes at the throat. Wash cool, dry flat, and store the sweater folded rather than hung, since a hanger stretches the shoulders and drags the short collar out of shape over time.
