Women's Cropped Sweater

Ending at or above the natural waist, a cropped sweater only works over a high rise.

Also called: crop knit, short sweater

The basics

What to know about Women's Cropped Sweater

Somewhere at or above the natural waist, a cropped sweater stops, several inches higher than the hip-bone hem a standard knit uses. Only the body length has been changed, which sounds minor until you realize it also decides which trousers the sweater can be worn with at all.

Shortening the body moves the ribbed hem up to the narrowest part of the torso, where it grips rather than skims. That grip is what stops the sweater climbing higher still. Sleeves usually stay full length on purpose, since the contrast between a short body and a long sleeve is the shape people are actually buying. Movement is the catch: knits drop when you reach or sit. A hem that clears your waistband while standing can leave a strip of skin the moment you bend to pick something up.

A standard pullover ends near the hip bone and tucks into anything, whereas a cropped one cannot tuck at all and so dictates a high rise underneath. A sweater vest solves the layering problem by removing sleeves instead of length. Boxy versions that are wide as well as short behave very differently from narrow ones, so read the chest measurement alongside the body length rather than assuming cropped means fitted.

High-rise trousers, high-waisted skirts and longer torsos get the most from this. It works well over a slip dress or a shirt whose tails you want showing. Mid-rise and low-rise wearers should pass, because the gap it opens is rarely the gap they chose. Cold rooms are the practical objection, since a bare waist undoes much of what a wool sweater is for.

Measure from the shoulder seam to the hem and set that against a sweater you already own, because crop lengths swing four inches between brands. Sit down in the fitting room and look at the back in a mirror. Wash cool and dry flat, since a rib hem that loses its grip turns a crop into an awkward short sweater.

Best for

When to choose this style

  • High-rise jeans and skirts meet a hem that ends at the waist.
  • Longer torsos gain proportion from a sweater that stops above the hip.
  • Worn over a slip dress or a long shirt, it shows what is underneath.
  • Bulky knits feel lighter to wear when the body is short.

Style comparison

Women's Cropped Sweater vs similar sweaters

  • Cable Knit

Cable knit crosses stitches over each other into raised ropes that make the fabric denser.

  • Sweater Vest

Losing the sleeves and gaining wider armholes lets a sweater vest go over a shirt cleanly.

  • Turtleneck

Fold a long ribbed collar in half and it stands around your throat without help.
