Women's Tailored Trousers (Pants)

Tailored trousers are cut from woven suiting cloth and pressed into a crease that runs down the center of each leg from the hip to the hem. That crease is the whole point. Heat and steam set a fold into the weave. The fold makes the fabric hang in a straight column instead of following the shape of your thigh.

Construction follows the crease. A firm waistband with a hook and bar closure holds the trouser at your natural waist. The leg can hang from a fixed point. Pockets sit inside the side seams rather than on the surface, which keeps the front smooth. Many pairs add pleats, which are folds of spare cloth at the waist that open to give room over the seat and thigh, then close again when you stand. Wool between roughly 9 and 12 ounces per yard takes a crease and keeps it through a day of sitting. A light summer cloth loses the line by lunch.

Set them beside their nearest neighbors and the differences are structural. Joggers reach the same ankle in knit fabric with an elastic cuff, so they can never hold a pressed line. Cargo pants break the leg with pockets sewn onto the outside of the thigh, which is exactly what tailoring works to avoid. Culottes stop short and swing wide. Paperbag waists gather cloth above the waistband where a trouser keeps it flat.

Offices with a written dress code, interviews and formal events are where trousers earn their place. Long legs get a hem set for a chosen shoe, and short legs get the same benefit from a higher rise. Leave them on the rail if your week never asks for them, because a good pair costs more than the same money spent on knit pants and it wants pressing.

Judge one by the inside. Turn up the hem and look for at least an inch and a half of spare cloth folded up. This lets a tailor lengthen the leg later. A lined waistband and a lining to the knee stop the trouser bagging behind the knee. Press on the seam line with a damp cloth between the iron and the wool, since direct heat leaves a permanent shine on dark cloth. Hang from a clamp hanger at the hem so the weight pulls the crease straight between wears.
