Women's Pants style guide

Women's Culottes (Pants)

Culottes cut the leg wide and short, so they move like a skirt but let you climb stairs.

Also called: split skirt, gauchos, cropped wide-leg

The basics

What to know about Women's Culottes (Pants)

Culottes take a pant leg, widen it until the opening is nearly as broad as it is deep, and stop it between just below the knee and the lower calf. Walking, they read as a skirt. Sitting, cycling or climbing, they behave like pants.

The shape depends entirely on how the cloth falls. A high rise plus real width across the thigh means there is more fabric than the body needs, and gravity decides what happens next. Crisp cotton twill or a firm linen holds the leg out in a bell. Crepe, viscose and soft rayon collapse into vertical folds and read closer to a wide trouser. Many pairs pleat the waist to control that volume, since gathering it instead adds bulk right where a tucked top sits. All that air moving around the leg is why culottes stay cool at 85 degrees and above when a straight pant does not.

Full-length wide-leg trousers cover the shoe and make one unbroken line from waist to floor; culottes deliberately cut that line and show the ankle. Paperbag waist pants put their feature at the top and can carry any leg shape at all. Tailored trousers keep the volume close and the crease sharp. Against a skirt, the difference is practical: you can take stairs two at a time and sit on the floor.

Heat and humidity are the conditions that suit them best, since air moves up the leg and out at the waist. Height helps, but the real rule is where the hem lands: a hem stopping at the widest part of your calf shortens the leg. One just above or well below it does not. Some shoe height restores the proportion under about 5'4". Two situations defeat them: a long fitted coat, where the width has to fold, and cold wind, which runs straight up the leg opening.

Hold a pair up and let the leg drop from the waistband. Fabric that swings and returns will move well on you; fabric that hangs limp is too soft for the cut. The rise should sit at your natural waist, because a low rise plus width reads as a mistake rather than a shape. Pale cloth needs a lining or a slip, since two wide legs backlit at noon show more than a skirt would. Steam the leg rather than pressing it flat, and hang from the waistband so the folds stay soft.

Best for

When to choose this style

  • Humid heat is bearable, because air moves up the leg opening and out at the waist.
  • Travel packs lighter, since one pair carries you through dinner and a day of walking.
  • Skirt shapes become practical, as the legs stay separate on stairs and bikes.
  • Sitting on the floor stops being the problem it is in a skirt.

Style comparison

Women's Culottes (Pants) vs similar pants

  • Leggings

Leggings hold to the leg by tension alone, so fabric recovery decides how long they last.

  • Cargo Pants

Cargo pants stitch expanding pockets onto the thigh, so what you carry changes how the leg hangs.

  • Joggers

Joggers gather volume above a knit ankle cuff, which is what gives them their tapered outline.
