Women's Leggings (Pants)

Leggings hold to the leg by tension alone, so fabric recovery decides how long they last.

Also called: stretch pants, footless tights, ponte leggings

The basics

What to know about Women's Leggings (Pants)

Leggings are knit pants cut smaller than the body they fit, so the fabric stretches onto you and holds by tension alone. No fly, no fastening, no internal structure. Length names do the sorting: full length covers to the ankle, seven-eighths stops an inch or two above it, and capri ends mid-calf.

Fabric decides whether they behave as clothing or as underwear. Cotton and modal jersey feels soft and bags at the knee within hours, because natural fibers stretch and stay stretched. Nylon or polyester blends carrying 8 to 25 percent elastane snap back, which is what holds the shape through a day. Ponte, a thick double knit, is the dressiest of the three. It has enough body to stand slightly away from the leg and takes a seam like a woven fabric. Color plays a part too, since black hides the thinning that happens under stretch and pale shades expose it.

Joggers sit at the other end of the same knit family, loose everywhere and cuffed at the ankle. Jeggings, listed under jeans, give this construction a denim face plus mock pockets and rivets, trading durability for the look. Training leggings live in activewear and are built around sweat, impact and seam friction rather than warmth and line. Choose the pair here when the job is layering under other clothes.

Winter layering under skirts, dresses and long sweaters is the main job. Travel is the second, since a pair packs to the size of a fist and dries overnight. Recovery and pregnancy are the third, because nothing presses on the abdomen. If your workplace expects a defined waistband, ponte is the version that passes and a thin jersey is the one that does not.

Grade them on recovery, not softness. Pull a section sideways and release it three times: fabric that stays wide will bag at the knee and seat. A waistband 3" to 4" deep stays level, while a narrow one rolls down as soon as you sit. Hems want a coverstitch, meaning two rows of stitching on the face with a looped thread underneath, since a single row pops under stretch. Cold water and a drying rack keep the elastane alive; heat is what breaks it, and once it goes the pair never fits again.

Best for

When to choose this style

  • Winter layering under dresses and boots works because the ankle stays slim.
  • Packing light is easy, since a pair weighs a few ounces and dries overnight.
  • Recovery and pregnancy suit them, as nothing presses against the stomach.
  • Desk days pass without the digging a woven waistband causes after eight hours.

Style comparison

Women's Leggings (Pants) vs similar pants

  • Joggers

Joggers gather volume above a knit ankle cuff, which is what gives them their tapered outline.

  • Culottes

Culottes cut the leg wide and short, so they move like a skirt but let you climb stairs.

  • Tailored Trousers

Tailored trousers hold a pressed crease that makes the leg hang straight instead of tracing your thigh.
