Lighting sorts into three jobs and a room needs all three. Ambient light fills the space and usually falls from the ceiling. Task light lands where you read, chop or work, so it has to sit close and be aimed. Accent light picks out a picture or a corner and does no useful work at all. Lit only from overhead, a room looks flat and everyone in it looks tired. That is why three separate sources per room is the working rule.

The shade, not the bulb, decides where light goes. An opaque drum shade throws two cones straight up and down, which is ideal beside a reading chair and useless for filling a corner. Pale linen or paper glows across its whole surface and spreads light sideways. Bulbs now sell in lumens instead of watts: about 800 lumens matches an old 60 watt bulb and 1600 matches a 100. Color temperature is printed on the box in Kelvin. 2700K is the warm yellow of old incandescent light that suits living rooms, 3000K reads slightly crisper for kitchens. 4000K and above turns clinical in a home.

The other light sources in this group each fall short in a specific way. A mirror redirects light that already exists, so it repays you beside a window and does nothing in a windowless hall. A lamp creates the light and is the actual answer in that hall. A candle sets mood but gives nothing you can read by and is spent within weeks. Curtains sit on the other side of the same equation, deciding how much daylight reaches you before a bulb is needed at all.

Reading chairs want a floor lamp whose shade bottom sits near shoulder height when you are seated, roughly 47 to 49 inches from the floor, or the bulb glares straight into your eyes. Home offices want light from the side rather than behind the screen, which kills reflections. Eyes need steadily more light with age. So a parent's house that felt fine at 40 usually needs close to double the light at 65. Renters stuck with one ceiling fixture solve it with two floor lamps and a table lamp rather than by fighting the landlord.

Weight and switch position separate a good lamp from a disposable one. Lift the base: a light table lamp goes over when the cord catches, a heavy one stays put. Find the switch with your eyes closed, because a switch hidden under a shade is a nightly annoyance, and prefer a foot switch or a smart bulb for anything across the room. Confirm the cord reaches the outlet you actually have, and that the fixture takes a dimmable bulb, since dimming is what lets one lamp serve both dinner and homework. Lint-roll fabric shades, which hold more dust than any other object in the room.
