Fullness decides whether curtains look expensive, and it is the measurement most buyers skip. Panels hang from a rod in front of the window, so add up their combined width and compare it with the window width. 2 to 2.5 times is the target. Below that the fabric hangs flat and stretched, which is the look people call rented. Two panels of 50 inches each across a 40 inch window is generous and correct.

The header, meaning the top edge that meets the rod, controls both the folds and the effort. Rod pockets gather tightly and look soft but drag when you pull them, so they suit panels you never really close. Grommets, the metal rings set into the fabric, slide easily and fall into even waves. Pinch pleats hold the deepest folds and cost the most. Lining is a separate layer sewn behind the panel. Plain lining adds body and blocks maybe half the light, while true blackout uses an opaque backing and takes a bedroom close to dark. Lined panels also cut drafts at a cold window, which is why heavy winter curtains were normal before double glazing.

Panels and hard treatments do different jobs even when they share a window. Blinds and shades mount inside the frame and meter light and privacy precisely, slat by slat, while curtains sit outside the frame, absorb echo and hide the frame itself. Plenty of rooms want both, shades for daytime adjustment and panels for the evening. Against a mirror, which fakes space by reflecting it, curtains change a wall's proportions directly: mount the rod 4 to 6 inches above the frame and run it 6 to 10 inches past each side, and the window reads taller and wider than it is.

Light sleepers and shift workers need blackout in the bedroom and should accept it will never be total, since light leaks around the edge of any panel unless the rod extends well past the frame. Street-facing rooms want a sheer layer underneath for daytime privacy. Renters can hang almost everything on tension rods inside the frame, leaving two small holes instead of a wall of them. Floor-length panels behind a swinging door, over a radiator or in a house with a climbing cat cause more trouble than they are worth.

Standard lengths run 84, 96 and 108 inches, so measure rod to floor before shopping and buy the next size up, because hemming down is easy and adding length is not. Panels should brush the floor or break by about half an inch, since curtains stopping at the sill make a ceiling look lower. Feel the weight in the store, as thin fabric flutters and shows light through in patches. Unpack them the day they arrive, hang them creased, and give gravity a week before you reach for a steamer.
