Home fragrance splits into three delivery methods and they behave nothing alike. A candle melts wax to release scent, so it needs heat, attention and roughly an hour of burning per inch of jar width to work at all. A reed diffuser wicks oil up porous sticks and releases it steadily with no flame, which suits bathrooms and bedrooms where nobody is watching. An electric warmer heats wax without fire and gives the strongest output for the money.

Wax type sets the burn. Paraffin throws scent hardest and fastest but burns down quicker and can soot the glass. Soy and coconut blends burn cooler and longer, often 40 to 60 hours in a standard 8 ounce jar, with a gentler release that suits small rooms. Wick size has to match jar width. Too small and the melted pool never reaches the glass, which carves a tunnel down the middle and wastes half the wax; too large and the flame dances and blackens the rim. The first burn sets that pattern permanently, so give a new candle three to four hours until the pool reaches the edge all the way around.

Weigh it against the other mood-setter in this group. A lamp gives light you can read by and runs for years on the price of a bulb, while a candle produces about as much usable light as a phone screen and is gone in weeks. That trade is the reason the comparison between two candles is price divided by stated burn hours rather than price alone. Against a vase or a mirror, bought once and kept, fragrance is a subscription. Against curtains, which change a room permanently, scent changes it for an evening.

Leases that forbid painting are where this shelf earns its place, since scent is the one change nobody can object to. Small bedrooms want a 4 ounce candle or a diffuser with three reeds, because a large candle in a small closed room turns into a headache inside twenty minutes. Cats and open flame do not mix, and concentrated essential oils are toxic to them, so a household with a cat should use neither. Asthma sufferers and rooms with a baby in them do better with unscented beeswax or nothing.

Judge a candle cold and then hot. Cold throw, the smell in the closed jar, tells you almost nothing, so ask for a lit tester if one exists, because heat changes a scent completely. The label should state burn hours and wax type, and a large jar running one small wick deserves suspicion. Trim the wick to about a quarter inch before every burn, which stops the flame smoking, and stop each burn at four hours so the glass does not overheat. Leaving a flame going in an empty room is the one rule with no exceptions, and the jar retires once half an inch of wax remains.
