Think of a frame as a package rather than a border. Glazing, the clear sheet at the front, sits over the art, which sits on a mat, which sits on a rigid backing, all pressed together. The mat, that flat card border between the art and the glazing, is the part that matters most and the part cheap frames leave out. It holds paper a few millimeters clear of the glass so humidity cannot glue the print to it. This is what ruins a photograph you can never reprint.

Glazing comes as glass or acrylic. Glass stays clear for decades and resists scratching, but it breaks and gets heavy above roughly 16 by 20 inches. Acrylic weighs about half as much, survives a fall, and scratches if you wipe it with anything gritty, so it belongs in kid's rooms, stairwells and anything hung over a bed. UV-filtering versions of both cost more and slow fading, which only earns its price on original work or a print you cannot replace. Acid-free mat board matters for the same reason: ordinary board yellows and burns a brown line into the edge of the art within a few years.

A mirror and a picture hang the same way and buy completely differently. Mirrors are cut to whatever size the wall allows. Art is chained to standard sizes, so 8 by 10, 11 by 14, 16 by 20, 18 by 24 and 24 by 36 inches are where affordable frames live. Stepping outside them means custom framing at several times the price. A mirror also never fades, while a print in a sunny room loses its reds first and goes cool and flat. Unlike a vase you can shift on a whim, a gallery wall is a set of holes, so lay the arrangement on the floor, trace each frame onto paper and tape the paper up before a nail goes anywhere.

Hang so the center of the picture lands near eye level, around 57 to 60 inches from the floor. This is the height galleries use and the reason museum walls feel comfortable. Humid rooms are the exception to all of it. In a bathroom moisture gets behind glass and the print ripples and buckles, so use unframed pieces there or accept the damage. Tight budgets go further across three matched standard-size frames than on one large custom job.

Press on the back of a frame in the shop. Thin cardboard flexes and lets dust in around the edges, while a rigid backing board held by metal clips does not. Hardware tells you the grade too: D-rings with wire spread the weight across two points and let you level the piece. By comparison, a single stamped sawtooth hook tilts the moment somebody closes a door. Keep everything out of direct sun, and dust the face instead of washing it, since liquid at the edge runs straight into the mat.
