Color Laser Printer

Four toners, cyan, magenta, yellow and black, sit in a row inside this design, and most current models lay all four down in a single pass so a color page emerges at close to the speed of a black one. The fusing step is identical to a monochrome machine, and so is the durability of what comes out.

Expect 10 to 15 cents for a color page and 2 to 4 cents for a black one, with four cartridges to stock rather than one. Many models add two service parts, a transfer belt and a fuser, each usually rated between 50,000 and 100,000 pages and replaceable without an engineer. Count both into the cost of ownership before comparing against an inkjet on cartridge price alone.

For a spreadsheet with colored headers, a chart deck or a flyer printed on plain paper, nothing else is as fast or as permanent, because fused toner does not run when a glass lands on it. For a photograph it is the wrong tool entirely. The Photo Printer exists because toner cannot build continuous tone. An Ink Tank Printer costs less per color page but takes longer and smears when wet.

Weight is 40 to 80 pounds, the footprint is larger than a home inkjet, and the fuser draws 600 to 1,200 W while warming, so this belongs on a solid surface with its own wall socket. The economics only work above roughly 100 color pages a month. Below that, four cartridges age on the shelf while the machine idles.

Ask one specific question before buying: what happens when a single color runs out. Some models refuse to print anything at all, including black-only documents, until the empty cartridge is replaced, which turns a magenta shortage into a stopped office on a deadline day. Ask a second question about the drum, the imaging unit that transfers toner onto paper. On some machines it is built into each cartridge, so you replace it automatically and pay for it every time. On others it is a separate part rated for 30,000 to 100,000 pages, cheaper per page but a surprise bill when it finally goes. Neither arrangement is wrong, and knowing which one you are buying is the difference between a predictable running cost and an unexpected one four years in.
