Clear Gel (Deodorant & Antiperspirant)

A clear gel is aluminum salt dissolved in water and glycol, thickened until it holds shape, and pushed through a slotted dome by a dial at the base. Nothing white is left behind, because there is no wax and no suspended powder in the formula.

Dissolved rather than suspended is the important part. The salt arrives already in solution, so it begins hydrating the duct opening as soon as it lands instead of waiting for sweat to wet a powder. A gelling agent holds the water in place long enough for that to happen. Propylene glycol or a gentler glycol keeps the gel from drying out in the pack. What you gain in invisibility you pay for in time. A gel stays damp for two to five minutes. Pulling a shirt over it inside 30 seconds moves half the dose onto the fabric.

Compared with a Solid Stick, this is the format for people who wear dark clothes and keep finding chalky stripes on them. Beside a Roll-On, the gel is thicker and stays where you put it rather than running toward the edge of the underarm, and it usually costs more per use. Alcohol free versions of both exist and sting far less on skin shaved within the last day.

Black uniforms, dark suits and anyone tired of checking their sleeves in a mirror make the clearest case for buying one. Bedtime application settles the drying complaint completely, since you have all night for it to set and nothing to put on afterward. Skin that reacts to propylene glycol is the case against, and a small patch behind the jaw or on the inner forearm for two days will tell you before your underarms do.

Advance the dial a quarter turn at a time, because a gel that overshoots cannot be pushed back in. Wipe the dome after use so dried gel does not block the slots. Keep the cap on tight, since water evaporates through a loose one and thickens what is left until the dome clogs. Cold does the opposite kind of damage, cracking the gel column so it breaks apart on the next use. This is a reason to keep it out of an unheated bathroom in winter.
