Flax is what the name describes. The fiber is stiff and hollow, so the yarn spun from it comes out uneven and the cloth woven from it sits open, with visible gaps between threads. Heat escapes through those gaps, and flax also pulls warmth off skin faster than cotton does. A linen short feels cool the second you put it on instead of after ten minutes. Cut has almost nothing to do with it.

Most pairs use a plain weave at roughly 150 to 200 grams per square meter, light enough to move air and heavy enough to stay opaque. Flax has almost no give, so the cloth creases sharply where it folds and stays creased. That is the fiber behaving normally rather than a manufacturing fault. Since nothing stretches, the cut has to be generous through the seat and thigh. A linen short bought snug will strain at the back seam within a season.

Cotton twill tailored shorts hold a pressed crease all day, while linen surrenders one inside the first hour. Bermuda describes a hem position, so a linen pair can easily be Bermuda length and often is. Athletic shorts in polyester handle sweat by wicking it along the fiber to evaporate, a different mechanism that works better under real exertion, whereas linen simply ventilates. Denim at the same length weighs three times as much and dries slowly, which is the main reason to choose linen over denim in August.

Genuine heat is where these pay off, dry or humid, on holiday, at the beach or through a city summer. Evenings work too when the pair is dark and cut clean. Avoid linen if your day requires looking pressed at six in the evening, and think twice before long drives, since sitting sets deep folds behind the knee that only steam removes. Pale colors need checking against daylight, because thin flax goes translucent and pocket bags show through.

Hold a pair up to a window before buying and look for an even weave with no thin patches, then feel the cloth. Good linen feels cool and dry, cheap linen feels papery and scratches. A half lining across the front hides pocket bags and stops the fabric clinging to a damp leg. Use a cool cycle, pull them out while still damp and hang them straight, then press with steam while damp if you want them smooth, since dry linen resists an iron.
