Women's Biker Shorts
Biker shorts grip the thigh in stretch knit and stop above the knee, so nothing rides or shifts.
Also called: cycling shorts, bike shorts
The basics
What to know about Women's Biker Shorts
A biker short is a tube of compressive knit ending part way down the thigh, usually at an inseam of 8 to 10 inches. Tension is the point: the fabric presses against skin while you stand still, which is exactly what stops it moving when you do not. Fashion versions leave out the chamois, the padded insert a genuine cycling short carries under the seat, so check for that pad if you plan to actually ride.
Nylon or polyester carries most of the fabric, with elastane at roughly 15 to 25 percent doing the gripping. Seams are usually flatlock, meaning two edges butted and stitched level instead of folded into a ridge, because a raised seam on the inner thigh rubs raw over a few miles. Many pairs finish with a silicone strip inside the hem, and without it the hem creeps upward on a warm day and gathers at the top of the thigh.
Athletic shorts hang loose and woven, moving air across the leg rather than holding it. Running shorts sit far shorter, split at the side hem and carry a brief liner. Leggings share the identical fabric family and simply continue to the ankle. What separates a biker short from all three is that the hem must grip. A loose hem on a compressive short is a fault, not a relaxed fit.
Humid weather and any skirt or dress you plan to walk in make the strongest case, since the fabric puts a smooth layer between thighs that would otherwise rub. Cyclists want the padded version. Pass on them if you overheat easily, because compression fabric holds warmth against the leg, and pass on thin ones entirely if you dislike checking opacity every time you bend.
Opacity is judged at full stretch, so pull the waistband and the seat apart between two hands and watch whether the color thins. A waistband 3 to 4 inches deep stays where you put it, while a narrow one folds over on the first squat. Cold water and no fabric softener keep the elastane alive, since softener coats the fibers and kills stretch recovery, and drying flat beats any amount of heat.
Best for
When to choose this style
- Hot and humid days, since the fabric stops thigh skin rubbing on thigh skin.
- Wearing under dresses and skirts when you plan to move all day.
- Cycling, but only in the version that includes the padded seat insert.
- Squats and lunges in the gym, because nothing shifts mid-rep.

Women's Biker Shorts vs similar shorts
Bermuda Shorts
Bermuda shorts stop at the knee, the longest inseam still sold as shorts rather than crops.
Paperbag Shorts
Paperbag shorts gather extra fabric above the waistband so it ruffles over a tie belt.
Tailored Shorts
Trouser construction, a flat front and a real waistband are what let tailored shorts pass a dress code.
