Women's Skinny Jeans

Skinny jeans hold the calf and ankle, which only works because elastane pulls the denim back each time.

Also called: skinnies, cigarette jeans

The basics

What to know about Women's Skinny Jeans

Contact from hip to ankle is what makes a jean skinny, and the leg opening proves it: usually 10 to 12 inches around the hem where a straight leg measures 15 to 17. The cloth follows your calf instead of falling past it, and that is a fit denim cannot reach on its own.

Stretch is structural rather than a comfort extra. Elastane at 1 to 3 percent lets the fabric expand over the calf and pull back afterward. Recovery is where the money goes, since two pairs with identical stretch behave differently after six hours because one carries polyester in the blend to help the elastic return. Each wear stretches a little further than the last, so a pair bought loose is baggy at the knee and seat within a month. Rigid skinny jeans do exist and are really uncomfortable, because a leg cut this close needs give to bend.

Jeggings push the same outline further by abandoning woven denim for a knit with an elastic waistband, gaining stretch and losing life. Straight-leg jeans hold one width from thigh to hem and never touch the calf. Bootcut adds an inch or two below the knee precisely so a boot shaft fits inside, while these slide inside the boot instead. Against mom jeans the difference sits in the seat, which is deliberately roomy there and deliberately not here.

Tucking into boots is the strongest practical case, because nothing else goes in without a wrinkle at the ankle. Cycling and travel suit them too, as a narrow leg never catches on a chain or a seat edge. Balance them with a longer or looser top so the outfit keeps one loose point. Anyone who sits for eight hours should size for comfort rather than the mirror, since a rise that pinches seated will pinch every day.

Squat once in the fitting room and stand back up, watching whether the knee holds its shape or keeps a bubble. Read the blend for polyester alongside the elastane, since that pairing recovers where elastane alone gives up. Wash cold, inside out and rarely, because every hot cycle shortens the life of the elastic the fit depends on. Keep them out of a dryer entirely, as heat breaks elastane outright and the pair never fits the same way again.

Best for

When to choose this style

  • Knee-high and ankle boots take them cleanly, since the leg tucks with no bulk.
  • Oversized knits and long tops balance well against a narrow leg.
  • Cycling and travel go easier when nothing catches on a chain or a seat.
  • Long coats hang properly over them, because the ankle stays slim inside the hem.

Style comparison

Women's Skinny Jeans vs similar jeans

  • Straight-Leg Jeans

One width from thigh to hem lets straight jeans skim the calf instead of gripping it.

  • Bootcut Jeans

Bootcut jeans fit to the knee then open an inch or two, just enough to fall over a boot shaft.

  • Flare Jeans

Flares fit to the knee then widen several inches, so the hem length has to match one heel height.
