Women's Cropped & Capri (Jeans)
Cropped jeans stop above the ankle and capris stop at mid-calf, so the lengths behave differently.
Also called: crops, ankle jeans, pedal pushers
The basics
What to know about Women's Cropped & Capri (Jeans)
Two lengths share this page and they are not the same. Cropped jeans end just above the ankle bone, usually a 25 to 27 inch inseam in a regular size. Capris finish around mid-calf, closer to 19 to 22 inches. Neither word says anything about the leg shape above the hem, so a cropped jean can be skinny, straight or wide.
Well-made short jeans are redrafted, not trimmed. Cut six inches off a tapered full-length leg and the hem opening ends up wider than the designer intended; do the same to a wide leg and you shorten the drape so it flares oddly at the bottom. A properly cut cropped wide leg keeps its full width down to the shortened hem, and a cropped straight keeps its line. That is what separates a pair that looks designed from a pair that looks hemmed.
Full-length jeans stack fabric at the ankle, a deliberate look but not always the one you wanted. Raw hem describes the finish at the bottom edge rather than the height, so a single jean can be cropped and raw hemmed at once. Capris behave closer to shorts than to jeans, ending above the boot line, which rules out any footwear you would otherwise tuck into.
Shorter frames gain the most, since a cropped inseam removes the puddling a standard length creates and lets the shoe show. Warm weather and travel favor them too. Full calves are the reason to avoid a capri specifically, because mid-calf is usually the widest point on the leg and a hem stopping there draws the eye straight to it. Cold climates make either length impractical without boots.
Ignore the label and set the inseam number against a pair you already own, because a cropped jean on a tall model is full-length on a short buyer. Stand in the shoes you intend to wear, since an inch of heel moves where the hem lands. Wash cold and line dry, as further shrinkage is far more noticeable on a short inseam than a long one.
Best for
When to choose this style
- Shorter frames avoid the fabric stacking a standard inseam creates.
- Ankle boots and loafers show properly when the hem clears them.
- Warm months feel cooler with several inches less denim on the leg.
- Wide-leg crops keep their width without dragging on the ground.
Style comparison
Women's Cropped & Capri (Jeans) vs similar jeans
Curvy Fit
Drafting the waist smaller relative to the hip closes the gap at your back waistband.
Distressed
Distressed jeans are sanded, whiskered and ripped on purpose, thinning the denim where it is weakest.
Jeggings
Jeggings are knit pants printed and stitched to read as denim, so they stretch far more and last less.
