What to know about Whole House Filters
Installation at the point of entry is what names this format. The housing goes on the main line after the meter or pressure tank and before the water heater, so every tap, shower, toilet and appliance in the building draws treated water. A sediment cartridge in a large sump usually comes first, and a carbon tank often follows it.
Two numbers decide whether one works. Flow rating in gallons per minute has to cover household peak demand, and a shower at 2.5 gallons per minute running alongside a washing machine and a kitchen tap asks for 10 to 15. That is why a housing rated at 6 makes every shower weak the moment anything else opens. Capacity is the second: a 5 micron sediment cartridge is the usual first line and gets changed on visible loading. By comparison, a whole house carbon tank is rated in the range of 100,000 gallons, roughly a year for a family.
Understand the boundary before spending. Carbon at the point of entry strips chlorine from every tap, so showers stop smelling of pool water and rubber seals in appliances last longer. Sediment removal protects the water heater, the washing machine and any point of use filter downstream. None of it reduces nitrate, arsenic or fluoride, and none of it disinfects. Anyone who needs drinking water treated to a health standard still puts an under sink or reverse osmosis unit at the kitchen sink. So these two formats are usually bought together rather than one instead of the other.
Wells carrying sand or iron, old iron mains that stain laundry rust orange, and skin or hair that reacts to chlorinated water are the cases that pay off. Apartments and anywhere you cannot legally cut into the main are out. Budget for the plumbing as well as the unit, since this is a soldered or press fitted job on a live main.
Insist on a bypass valve and shutoffs on both sides, so a cartridge change takes ten minutes and does not shut the house down. Pressure gauges before and after the housing turn guesswork into a reading: replace the cartridge once the difference reaches 10 to 15 psi. Leave about 3 feet of clear pipe run and 6 inches of space below the sump so it can drop free, and sanitize the housing with an unscented bleach solution at every change.
