Refrigerator & Inline Filters

Two shapes share this job. One is a cartridge that twists into a bay inside the refrigerator, in the grille at the bottom or the upper right corner of the fresh food compartment. The other is a cylinder spliced into the quarter inch plastic supply tube running to the appliance. This is how you filter a fridge that has no bay, along with ice makers, humidifiers and plumbed coffee machines.

Carbon does the work in both, in a small block sized for slow intermittent draws. Typical life runs 200 to 300 gallons or about six months. Certification varies more here than anywhere else on the shelf. Cartridges supplied for a given appliance often hold NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 claims. The replacement market is crowded with look-alikes that fit the bay perfectly and were never tested against anything. A cartridge clicking into place proves the shape, not the performance.

Every plumbed refrigerator also accepts a bypass plug, a solid insert that closes the water circuit with no filtration at all. That part matters, because running an expired cartridge is worse than running the plug. Saturated carbon can shed what it collected and becomes a place for bacteria to grow in a warm damp housing.

Households that drink and take ice from the door are the obvious owners, which is nearly everyone with the feature. Anyone already considering an under sink filter should compare, though, since one large cartridge in the cabinet can feed both the drinking tap and the refrigerator line, holds five times the media, and costs far less per gallon. Inline cylinders are the cheap answer for older appliances and for water lines that feed something other than a glass.

Match certification rather than shape when buying replacements, and treat an uncertified cartridge as a spacer that improves nothing. Change on schedule even in a household that barely uses the dispenser, because damp carbon supports bacteria whether water moves through it or not. After every change, run 2 to 4 gallons through the dispenser to clear trapped air and carbon fines, and throw away the first two batches of ice, which will carry both.
