What to know about Reverse Osmosis Systems (Water Filters & Purifiers)

Several stages in a row make up one of these, and the membrane in the middle is the point. Sediment and carbon prefilters come first, the second one there to strip chlorine because chlorine destroys the membrane material within months. The membrane itself has pores near 0.0001 micron, so household line pressure pushes clean water through and everything rejected goes down a drain line. A carbon post filter polishes what comes out of storage.

Nothing else in a home reduces dissolved solids across the board. Nitrate, arsenic, fluoride, sodium, hexavalent chromium and PFAS all fall by 90 percent or more, along with most of the total dissolved solids in the water. NSF/ANSI 58 is the standard that covers complete systems. A worthwhile package names the contaminants it was tested against plus a dissolved solids reduction figure. Inlet pressure decides performance: membranes want 40 to 60 psi, and below 40 the system makes less water and sends more of it to the drain. This is what a booster or permeate pump is for.

Slowness is the cost buyers underestimate. A system rated at 50 gallons a day produces about half a cup a minute, so a bladder tank stores 2 to 3 usable gallons and refills over an hour or two after you empty it. Drain ratios have improved: older designs waste 3 to 4 gallons per gallon produced, current ones run near 1 to 1. Tankless models use a pump and a larger membrane to deliver on demand, free up cabinet space, and need an electrical outlet nearby.

Buy one when a water test names something carbon cannot reach, not because it sounds thorough. Nitrate or arsenic on a well, high dissolved solids that make coffee taste chalky, and aquarium keeping are the cases. Coliform bacteria on a well is not one, since a membrane is not a certified disinfection barrier by itself and needs ultraviolet ahead of it.

Minerals leave with everything else, and water under about 50 parts per million of dissolved solids tastes flat and reads slightly acidic, so most systems now finish with a remineralizing cartridge. Replace prefilters every 6 to 12 months without fail, as a passed through chlorine slug kills a membrane that would otherwise last 2 to 5 years. Check tank air pressure with a tire gauge while the tank is empty; 5 to 7 psi is right. A flat bladder is why a full tank delivers one cup.
