That trickle is enough to keep the screen lit and the Wi-Fi radio awake between actual heating or cooling calls.

The main alternative is not a different style at all but a power extender kit, a small adapter installed at the furnace that manufactures a true common wire instead of borrowing power.

Homes wired before smart thermostats existed suit it well, the ones carrying only R, W, Y, and G at the thermostat, especially when running a new fifth wire through finished walls is impractical or expensive. Homeowners who want a smart thermostat working the same day it arrives, without scheduling an electrician first, get real value from a model that handles the missing C wire on its own.

Homes with an especially old or sensitive furnace control board are the exception, since power stealing has caused relay chatter, a faint hum, or an intermittent fan cycle on some equipment, particularly newer boards built around variable speed blowers.
