What to know about Line Voltage Thermostat

Line voltage is what separates this style from every other thermostat on this page. A Line Voltage Thermostat switches 120 or 240 volt household power directly, the same voltage running to a dryer outlet, rather than sending a 24 volt signal to a furnace's transformer. It wires straight into an electric baseboard heater or a wall convector circuit, carrying the full current those heaters draw instead of just switching a low power relay.

All the other styles covered here, the Learning Thermostat, the Programmable Smart Thermostat, the Remote Sensor Thermostat, the No C Wire Thermostat, and most Touchscreen Thermostats, assume a 24 volt low voltage system and are not compatible with baseboard wiring at all. That is not a small compatibility gap. A low voltage smart thermostat wired into a line voltage circuit fails immediately on contact with the higher current, and no adapter or workaround bridges the two families safely.

Rooms heated by electric baseboard or a line voltage wall heater are the only real fit, since there is no other smart option for that wiring. Older homes and additions that rely on baseboard heat in one or two rooms, rather than central forced air heating the whole house, are the typical setting. A room with its own baseboard loop and its own thermostat can be scheduled independently of the rest of the house, which suits a sunroom, a converted garage, or a guest room used only occasionally.

A central furnace or heat pump needs an entirely different device. Turn off the breaker before opening any thermostat wiring regardless of which family it belongs to, since every wire behind a line voltage thermostat carries full household current with no low voltage buffer in between. This is not a project to start without cutting power first.

Fewer smart models exist in this voltage class than in the 24 volt world, so the feature set runs thinner: learning schedules, room sensors, and detailed energy reports are less common here, and the selection shrinks fast once you also need a specific amperage rating for the heater it controls. Every wire in the box is live at full household voltage, which makes this the one style on this page where a careless installer risks a real shock rather than a fried circuit board.
