Nothing separates the edge from your face, and nothing replaces it either. One piece of hardened steel hinges into a pair of handle plates called scales, and that steel is maintained rather than swapped out. Learning this tool means learning to keep an edge as much as learning to shave with one.

Grind and width describe most blades. A full hollow grind is thinned until the steel flexes and rings, giving feedback through the fingers and rewarding a light touch. A wedge grind stays thick and stiff, plows through coarse growth and asks more skill on curves. Width runs in eighths of an inch. 5/8 is the usual starting size, narrow enough to work under a nose and broad enough to carry lather. Carbon steel takes a keener edge and rusts if left wet, while stainless shrugs off water and takes longer to hone. Before each shave the edge is stropped on leather, which realigns the very tip of the edge rather than removing metal. Every couple of months it goes to a stone to be honed properly.

A shavette looks identical and behaves differently: it clamps a disposable half blade, needs no strop and no stones, and forgives less, because a factory edge is sharper and more rigid than a stropped one. Safety razors keep the same single edge and put a guard back in front of it. Barbers in many US states are limited to disposable blade holders, since a honed edge cannot be reliably sterilized between clients, and those rules vary from state to state.

Treat this as equipment rather than a purchase. Skin gets stretched with the free hand, the blade is held at roughly 30 degrees. Strokes are short and unhurried with the jaw held still. Cuts here are deeper than nicks, because nothing stops the edge once it bites. Patient shavers who go three or four times a week and enjoy the process get on with it. A rushed weekday morning, an unsteady hand or a prescription blood thinner are all reasons to choose something else.

Buy shave ready or budget for honing, since the factory edge on most new blades will not shave and a razor that pulls convinces people the whole method is wrong. Inspect the spine and edge for pitting, then open and close the blade to see that it centers in the scales without touching them. Wipe it dry after every use, oil carbon steel if the bathroom stays humid, and strop before you shave rather than after.
