A safety razor clamps a single flat blade between a curved cap and a guard, leaving a sliver of edge exposed along each side. Both edges cut, which is where the name double edge comes from. Nothing pivots, so the angle between blade and skin is set entirely by how you hold the handle. Roughly 30 degrees is the number to learn first.

Three builds exist. A three piece unscrews into cap, base plate and handle and is the simplest to clean. A two piece keeps the plate attached to the handle. A twist to open, also called butterfly, cracks the top like a pair of doors and takes a blade in seconds. None of that changes the shave much. Blade exposure and gap do: how far the edge sits past the line of the guard, and how much room is left for lather to pass through. Mild heads hide the edge and forgive pressure. Aggressive heads expose more, clear three days of growth in one pass and punish a heavy hand. Slant heads twist the blade so it meets hair on a diagonal, slicing rather than chopping, which suits coarse growth.

Set beside a cartridge razor, this is the opposite bargain: you supply the angle and the technique, and in exchange a blade costs 10 to 25 cents and only one edge crosses any patch of skin. Bump prone shavers move here. Straight razors take the idea further and remove the guard as well. Single edge razors, which take a thicker injector or GEM style blade, sit between the two with a stiffer edge and fewer blade choices.

Coarse or curly beards, sensitive skin and anyone tired of buying heads do well here. Weight supplies the pressure, so 70 to 120 grams in the hand is the point of all that metal. What it costs is weeks of learning. Expect nicks, expect a second pass, and expect the first month of shaves to run twice as long as the ones they replaced.

Check the head for a flush fit before paying, since a blade that rocks in the clamp chatters across skin. Heft the handle with a wet hand and prefer knurling, the crosshatched texture cut into metal, over polished chrome. Blades from different makers cut differently on the same face, so a sampler pack of five or six kinds finds your match faster than reading opinions. Dry the razor after use, and unload the blade if you shave rarely, because water trapped under a clamped blade rusts the head as well as the edge.
