Behind the thin perforated screen of a foil shaver sits the only cutting edge in the machine. That screen is why the tool cannot cut you. Hair drops through the holes, a cutter block sweeps side to side thousands of times a minute. Each hair is sheared against the inside of the foil. Your skin only ever touches metal with no edge on it.

Foil thickness sets closeness, and the better screens measure in hundredths of a millimeter, thin enough to dent under a fingertip. Motion is linear, which is why these shavers excel on flat planes: cheeks, the sides of a jaw, and the strip under the nose that round heads cannot reach cleanly. Two, three or four heads widen the band cleared per pass. Because the shearing happens above the skin, no stump ever lands below the surface. That single fact is why shavers who fight ingrown hairs get along with electric shaving when blades keep failing them.

Rotary shavers spin circular cutters and beat foils on curl, on patchy growth and on the contours of a neck, while foils win on straight hair, on daily shaving and on drawing a clean line at a sideburn. Beard trimmers cut long hair and deliberately leave length; a foil head clogs on anything past about three days, so trim first and shave second.

Daily shavers with straight to wavy hair, sensitive skin, and anyone who shaves at a desk or in a car park are the natural audience. What you trade is closeness and money. Stubble reappears by evening rather than overnight, the machine costs 100 to 300 dollars before it saves anything. Foils and cutters are consumables at 30 to 50 dollars roughly once a year.

Weigh the head rather than the marketing. A head floating on two or more axes keeps the foil flat against a jaw. A foil that gives under light pressure was made thin on purpose. Read the water rating, since IPX7 means the body takes 30 minutes under one meter of water and can go under a running tap. Aim for a lithium battery with 45 to 60 minutes of runtime and a quick charge that returns one shave in five minutes. Rinse after each use, replace foil and cutter together as a pair, and bin a torn screen immediately, because a split foil exposes the cutter to skin.
