Travel Size (Fragrance)

Travel sizes are miniature atomizers holding the same liquid as the full bottle, usually a quarter to half an ounce. Two kinds exist and they are not equal. Sealed minis are filled and capped at the factory. Refillable atomizers arrive empty and you charge them from a larger bottle yourself, a practice called decanting.

Air travel rules set the size, not perfumery. Carry-on liquids in the US must each sit at 3.4 fluid ounces or 100 mL and under, and fit inside one quart sized clear bag, and every travel fragrance clears that ceiling with room to spare. The spray mechanism copies the full bottle, so projection and wear time are identical. Decants are the exception: pumping perfume through air introduces oxygen, and a decant kept a year loses its top notes faster than the sealed source.

The rollerball is the other small format, and it stays on skin while this one still fills the air around you. A gift set bundles what the brand chose; here you decide what goes in. Buying the full bottle costs far less per ounce, sometimes half, so the premium you pay buys the freedom to not commit and the peace of not putting expensive glass in a suitcase.

Frequent flyers, anyone testing a scent for a couple of weeks before committing, and people who run two fragrances for two halves of the day should all keep one. Weddings, hotel stays and long shifts are the classic uses. Avoid making one your main purchase, though: buying a daily scent in half ounce increments is the most expensive way to own perfume.

Glass with a metal collar survives a bag, while all plastic sprayers crack at the shoulder and weep. Three test presses on a store tester tell you plenty, because weak pumps mist unevenly and dribble down the side. Never leave one in a car through summer, since a closed car passes 120 degrees Fahrenheit and heat is what actually ruins fragrance. Once filled, treat a decant as having roughly a year of good life rather than the several years a sealed bottle gets.
