Eau de Toilette (Fragrance)

Eau de toilette dilutes the same perfume oils into more alcohol, and the result behaves differently rather than merely weaker. Bright materials dominate: citrus peel, herbs, light florals, aquatic notes. Three to five hours from a couple of sprays is a fair expectation on most skin, less on dry skin, which holds scent poorly because there is little surface oil for the molecules to cling to.

Alcohol content explains the whole personality. More of it makes a bigger, faster flash in the first ten minutes, a real opening burst, then a quicker slide into whatever base sits underneath. Fabric changes the math. Scent laid on a cotton collar can outlast the same spray on skin by hours, since cloth neither warms nor absorbs, though silk and pale linen stain and should be left alone.

Put the eau de parfum of the same name beside it and the differences turn out to be structural. Where a parfum sinks into warm resins and musks, this keeps its top notes in play and stays brighter for longer. Cologne strength thins the idea further and rarely reaches lunchtime. Body mist belongs to another product family altogether, closer to scented water, with almost no base left to develop.

Summer, commuting, gyms and offices are natural ground. Anyone who likes to change scent through the day should own toilettes rather than parfums, because the previous one clears out of the way. Price per ounce usually undercuts the parfum in the same line, which makes this the sane pick for a scent you spray generously. Look elsewhere if one application has to cover 12 hours, or if very dry skin eats light fragrance within the hour.

Testing rules are stricter here because the good part happens early. Apply to skin, wait 20 minutes for the alcohol to clear, form your opinion, then check again at hour three to see what survives. Carrying a small decant for the afternoon top up beats hauling the main bottle, which gets warm and knocked about in a bag. Bottles kept upright in a dark cupboard hold their character for years; the ones that go off live on windowsills.
