Body Mist
Sprays a light scent over the whole body, lasting an hour or two and staying close.
Also called: fragrance mist, body spray
The basics
What to know about Body Mist
Body mist dilutes fragrance far past any perfume strength, usually into water and a little alcohol, and sells it in bottles several times the size. Coverage is what that buys: arms, chest, legs and hair all at once, without the intensity that would make the same gesture unwearable with perfume. Expect an hour or two before it is gone.
Structure differs here, not only strength. A perfume is built in stages, with top notes that flash off, a heart that follows and a base that lingers. That unfolding is what people mean by drydown. Too little material is present in a mist to build stages, so the first minute is the whole experience, repeated until it fades. Fruit, sugar and clean laundry accords dominate the shelf because they read clearly at low concentration, while woods and resins would simply disappear.
Cologne strength is weak by perfume standards and still built as a perfume, with real structure and a sharper citrus register. A rollerball concentrates scent on one warm spot, while this spreads a faint one everywhere. A candle or a diffuser scents a room instead of a person. The most useful pairing is a matching body lotion, since mist alone has little to cling to and moisturized skin holds it noticeably longer.
Teenagers, gym bags, school and college, hot climates and offices with a scent policy are its natural territory. Anyone who gets a headache from full strength perfume can wear this instead. Bottles are large and cheap by the ounce, which the format assumes you will exploit. Anyone who needs scent to survive a working day should buy a toilette. Dry or eczema prone skin should avoid the alcohol heavy versions.
Spray from about 8 inches back and walk through the cloud rather than aiming at one point. This is how the format is meant to work. Try it on skin in the store, wait 15 minutes, and accept that what you smell then is what you get, because no development is coming. Water or alcohol as the first ingredient tells you a lot. Water based mists are gentler, alcohol based ones dry faster and hang on slightly longer. Finish a bottle inside a year, since low concentration and water content make these turn sooner than perfume.
