Women's Moto Jacket

A moto jacket closes on a diagonal. The zip sits off center, so one side of the front crosses the other and folds back into a wide lapel. That offset came from riding. A rider leaning forward gets a hard zip line down the sternum, and moving it to the side solves the problem. This is also why the collar snaps down and the pockets angle toward the hands.

Leather is the traditional shell and the type changes the jacket completely. Cowhide is thick, heavy, takes years to soften and protects. Lambskin is light and supple from the first wear and scratches easily. Coated cotton and polyurethane copies give the look for a fraction of the price and crack at the fold lines after a few seasons. Since leather has almost no stretch across the back, the fit has to allow for a sweater underneath, and the belt at the waist tightens the hem against wind rather than shaping you.

A bomber uses a straight center zip and a knit band that gathers the hem in, where a moto keeps the hem flat and belts it. Denim jackets button through a woven cotton front and sit boxy on purpose. A blazer carries a lapel too, but a tailored one built with canvas inside, no hardware and a formal look. Kimono-style jackets have no closure at all. Among short jackets, this is the one that reads hardest, and the hardware is why.

Dry weather between 45 and 60 degrees is the window. It works over a dress to cut the sweetness and over a hoodie for the opposite reason. Steady rain is where it stops working, since water leaves permanent marks on untreated leather. The cut is built square, so anyone who dislikes a strong shoulder should pass. Price splits the category honestly: real hide is a decade purchase and a coated one is a two-season purchase.

Fold back a cuff and study the reverse of the leather, which should be suede-like and fibrous rather than smooth and plastic. Genuine hide smells of leather, creases into soft lines and warms in your hand. Test every zip twice, since hardware fails first and costs a lot to replace. Condition leather once or twice a year with a cream made for garments rather than boots. Keep it away from radiators, which shrink and crack the hide, and hang it on a broad hanger so the shoulders keep their line.
