A bomber blouses in the middle because the body is cut fuller than the knit bands that finish it. Ribbing at the hem, at the cuffs and often at the collar pulls the fabric in at three points. The extra cloth has to go somewhere, so it puffs. Warm air gets trapped the same way.

Flight jackets are the source and the engineering shows. A zip front opens fast, slash pockets keep hands warm, and the gathered hem seals the gap at the waist that costs you more heat than the fabric ever does. Shell fabrics changes how formal it looks more than the shape does. Nylon is light, wind-resistant and shiny, satin and suede push it dressy, wool makes it a cold-city jacket, and a quilted lining adds real warmth. Because the rib grips at the high hip, a bomber ends at a fixed point on your body, and that point sets the whole silhouette.

Denim jackets button rather than zip and finish with a flat hem, so they read straighter and squarer. Moto jackets belt the waist instead of banding it and bring a diagonal zip. Anoraks pull over the head and are built for weather, which a bomber is not. A varsity jacket is a bomber with leather sleeves and a snap front. Vests share the casual layering job with no sleeves at all.

Wind at 50 to 65 degrees is the condition it was built for. Check where the band lands if you are petite or short in the torso, since a hem stopping at your widest point adds width exactly there. In contrast, longer torsos get the cleanest version of the shape. Do not count on it in rain, since most shells shed a shower and nothing more.

Pull the hem rib wide between both hands and let it go. It should snap back tight, because a band that stays wide will not recover and the jacket loses its shape permanently. Run the zip from the very bottom, where cheap sliders catch on the rib. A quilted or brushed lining tells you which season it belongs to. Nylon washes cold and hangs dry; keep the ribbing out of the dryer, since heat destroys the elastic in the knit.
