Women's Denim Jacket

Take a pair of jeans, shorten the body and add a collar. You have the denim jacket: the same woven cotton twill, a yoke across the chest, two flapped chest pockets and adjustable tabs at the sides of the hem. Those tabs are the detail most people ignore and the one that changes the fit by an inch or so on each side.

Denim weight sets the character. Around 10 ounces per square yard the jacket feels soft immediately and works in spring. At 12 to 14 ounces it stands away from the body, holds a collar upright, takes years to break in and molds to you as it does. Added elastane makes a jacket comfortable on day one and slowly bags at the elbows, since stretch fibers do not recover the way cotton does. The body is cut square on purpose so a sweater fits underneath without pulling the buttons.

Bombers pull the hem in with a knit band and taper the body. A denim jacket ends flat and open at the waist. It sits over a longer top instead of cropping it. Moto jackets bring hardware, leather and a diagonal zip to the same length. Kimono-style jackets have no structure to speak of. Under menswear the same garment is called a trucker jacket, and many people buy across the aisle for a boxier cut.

Spring and fall carry it, roughly 55 to 70 degrees, and it doubles as a mid layer under a wool coat in real cold, where denim adds surprising warmth for its thickness. Rain is the one thing it cannot do: cotton twill soaks, gets heavy and takes a day to dry. If you wear jeans daily, buy the jacket in a clearly different wash, since matching shades head to toe read as a set rather than an outfit.

Feel the fabric weight in your hand and press the collar to see whether it stands. A collar that flops will look tired within a season. Shoulder seams belong at the outer edge of your shoulder, since that is the one part a tailor cannot move. Wash it two or three times a year at most, cold and turned inside out, because every cycle takes indigo with it. Spot clean the collar and cuffs in between, and dry it on a hanger rather than in heat, which shrinks cotton unevenly.
