Women's Track Jackets (Activewear)

A track jacket zips on over damp gear to hold warmth in while you warm up or cool down.

Also called: warm-up jacket

The basics

What to know about Women's Track Jackets (Activewear)

Full zip, stand collar, ribbed or elastic cuffs and hem: those four details make a track jacket, and each exists because the garment is designed to go on and come off around a session rather than be worn through it. The traditional fabric is tricot, a smooth warp-knitted polyester with a faint sheen, light enough to fold into a training bag.

Almost none of its warmth comes from insulation. A smooth unbrushed knit traps very little air on its own. So what it really does is stop moving air stripping heat off damp skin, while closed cuffs, hem and collar keep that thin warm layer where you need it. A full zip lets you vent by degrees as your temperature climbs, which is why a pullover never quite replaces one. The same thinness that makes it easy to carry means it will not keep you warm standing still in real cold.

Fleece hoodies insulate several times better and take an hour to dry once sweat gets into the brushed pile. Windbreakers stop wind outright with a coated shell but have no stretch and seal sweat in against you. A training top sits underneath as the layer touching skin. A matching set may include a jacket cut in the set fabric rather than in tricot. What the track jacket does that none of them manage is come on and off quickly over damp gear without dragging.

Team sports, outdoor warm-ups, cool mornings before the sun reaches the track and long airport days all suit it. Anyone training in rain needs a shell instead, since tricot soaks straight through. In winter, treat it as a mid layer under a real coat rather than as the coat. Runners and riders who need to be seen should think about color, because black tricot in low light disappears.

Zipped pockets separate a useful jacket from a frustrating one, since anything in an open pocket ends up on the floor by a bench. Pull a cuff wide and let go. It should spring back rather than stay stretched, because a dead cuff lets cold air run up the arm. A small fabric guard at the top of the zip stops the slider catching your chin. Zip it closed before washing so the teeth do not chew the fabric, then run it cold and hang it to dry.

Best for

When to choose this style

  • Warming up and cooling down outdoors, when your body temperature swings fast.
  • Team sports, since it goes on over damp gear without sticking.
  • Travel days, because it folds small and doubles as a layer on the plane.
  • Cool mornings that turn warm, thanks to a zip you can vent by degrees.

  • Running Shorts

Running shorts cut the inseam short and add a built-in liner so your legs swing without chafing.

  • Matching Sets

A matching set pairs a top and bottom cut from one fabric, so the color and texture line up exactly.

  • Training Tops

Training tops move sweat off your skin so it can evaporate instead of soaking in and chilling you.
