What to know about Solar Water Heater
A Solar Water Heater collects sunlight in roof mounted panels and stores the result in a tank, with a conventional heater finishing the job whenever the sun has not. Two collector types dominate. Flat plate collectors are an insulated glazed box over a dark absorber plate, cheap and durable. Evacuated tube collectors use glass tubes with a vacuum inside, which cuts heat loss and holds performance better in cold or overcast weather, at higher cost and with more fragile parts.
Circulation splits the family again. Active systems use a small pump and a controller that runs it only when the collector is hotter than the tank. Passive systems have no pump: a thermosyphon design puts the tank above the collector and lets hot water rise into it, and an integral collector storage design combines both into one black tank behind glass. Passive systems fail less because they contain less, and they suit frost free climates only. Where freezing occurs, use an indirect system with a food grade glycol loop between collector and tank, or a drainback design that empties the collector when the pump stops.
Expect a solar fraction of 50 to 80 percent of annual water heating, meaning the backup still runs on dark weeks and in midwinter. Sizing is per person: roughly 20 square feet of flat plate collector and 20 gallons of storage each, so a household of four wants about 80 square feet and an 80 gallon tank. The roof needs unshaded exposure toward the equator. The structure has to carry the load, since a full integral collector storage unit can exceed 400 pounds concentrated on one part of the roof.
Compare it honestly against the modern rival. Solar thermal still wins where sunshine is strong and electricity is expensive, and it delivers heat directly without conversion losses. Maintenance is the part buyers underestimate. Glycol degrades and turns acidic, so it wants testing every two years and replacement every five. A failed controller or stuck pump can cook a collector loop or let it freeze and split. Check the tank's anode and the backup heater on the same schedule as any other tank.
