What to know about Electric Storage Tank Water Heater
An Electric Storage Tank Water Heater has no burner, no flue and no combustion air requirement. Two screw-in immersion elements heat the water directly, one about a third of the way up the tank and one near the bottom, each with its own thermostat clamped to the tank wall. They are interlocked so only one runs at a time. A pair of 4,500 watt elements still draws 4,500 watts and not 9,000. That load needs a dedicated 240 volt, 30 amp circuit in 10 gauge wire in North America; supply voltage and wire sizing differ elsewhere, so confirm the local rule.
Recovery is the weakness. A 4,500 watt element adds roughly 20 gallons an hour at a 90 degree rise, half what a mid sized gas burner manages. That means electric tanks are usually sold one size larger: 50 gallons where a Gas Storage Tank Water Heater would be 40. A Heat Pump Water Heater is the direct upgrade, using the same water connections and about a third of the power, but standing taller and needing room air. Electric Tankless removes the standby loss and replaces it with an electrical service problem. Point-of-Use models use the same element and thermostat design in miniature.
The appeal is placement and simplicity. With nothing to vent, it fits a closet, an interior utility room or an apartment. The whole install is two water connections, a circuit and a drain pan. UEF, the uniform energy factor, runs near 0.92, higher than any gas tank, and that number misleads plenty of buyers. It measures how much of the energy entering the appliance reaches the water, not what that energy costs. At 16 cents per kWh, a family of four spends roughly 600 dollars a year here against 250 to 350 dollars on gas. Where power is cheap, or a timer can shift heating into an off peak window, the sum changes.
Two failures repeat. The lower element burns out first because sediment buries it. Flushing 2 to 3 gallons twice a year is real maintenance rather than a ritual. The other is the anode rod. On a softened water supply it can be consumed in as little as three years. Once it is gone the tank corrodes from the inside with no warning until it leaks.
