Wall-Mount Chimney Hood

A Wall-Mount Chimney Hood hangs on the wall in the space a cabinet used to fill, and the vertical trim rising from the canopy to the ceiling, called the chimney, covers the duct rather than doing any work. Canopies come 18 to 27 inches deep, box shaped or angled, in 30, 36, 42 and 48 inch widths. Blowers usually span 400 to 1,200 CFM. Depth is the real gain. A deep canopy holds the plume for a second or two, long enough for the fan to take it, which a slim under-cabinet shell never manages.

An Under-Cabinet Range Hood keeps the storage above and gives up that depth. A Hood Insert is the same machinery without a finished skin, waiting for custom joinery. An Island Hood is the ceiling-hung version and needs about half again the airflow, having no wall to funnel anything. A Microwave Hood Combination occupies the same wall position but ventilates far less.

This is the shape to buy when you are renovating anyway, cook on gas above 45,000 BTU, or live with an open plan where cooking smells travel into the sofa. Standard chimney covers are cut for an 8 foot ceiling. A 9 or 10 foot ceiling needs the extension piece made for that model, so order it with the hood. Skip the style if the duct cannot reach an outside wall or roof, or if losing that cabinet costs you storage you really use. Test the mounting height against your own eye line before the installer drills.

Judge it on capture and quiet. Canopy depth of 20 inches or more, a perimeter slot that speeds air up around the canopy edge, and stainless baffle filters all beat a big headline number. Certified airflow at 0.1 inches of water gauge is the only figure worth comparing. Four speeds or a variable dial lets you keep a quiet setting running. If the model accepts an inline or exterior blower, the motor leaves the kitchen and so does most of the noise.

Wash the baffles monthly, wiping the grease cup out at the same time. Degrease the blower wheel twice a year, and clean the inside face of the canopy while it is still warm, since cooled grease hardens into a yellow varnish. Use a stainless-safe cleaner and work with the grain, because scouring pads leave permanent scratch tracks. Check the outdoor cap yearly, and if the model boosts the fan automatically on a heat sensor, test that once a season by letting a pan get properly hot.
