Island Hood

An Island Hood hangs from the ceiling above a cooktop with no wall behind it, finished on all four sides because you will see all four. Widths run 30 to 48 inches, and the duct goes straight up through the ceiling and out the roof. Nothing shelters this hood: air moves across an island from every direction. A plume that would climb neatly against a wall gets pushed sideways before it arrives.

A Wall-Mount Chimney Hood does the same job with a wall doing half the work, and needs less airflow for it. A Downdraft Vent is the alternative when nothing may hang over the island at all. A Hood Insert can sit inside a custom island canopy, which is how a plaster or timber hood over an island gets built.

Buy this when the cooktop lives on the island and you want real extraction rather than a compromise. Size up: overhang the cooktop by 6 inches on each side, mount 30 to 36 inches above the surface, and add roughly 50 percent to the airflow you would use against a wall, so a 36 inch gas cooktop at 60,000 BTU lands near 900 CFM. Avoid it where a ceiling supply register blows across the island, since that draft steals the plume, and where the ceiling is under 8 feet, because the canopy will sit in your sightline all day.

Weight is the first quality check: these units run 60 to 120 pounds and belong on solid blocking between joists, never on drywall anchors. Confirm the chimney extension exists for your ceiling height before ordering. Then compare certified airflow, sones at high speed, canopy depth, whether all four faces are finished to the same standard, and whether an exterior blower is offered, which matters most here because the hood sits at head height in the middle of the room.

Level it and keep it level, since a hood hanging visibly out of true over an island is the one installation fault everybody notices. Wash filters monthly and degrease the wheel twice a year. Wipe all four outer faces, not only the front, and use a stainless cleaner along the grain. Inspect the roof cap yearly for a stuck damper and for the nest that a warm, sheltered vent invites.
