NATO Strap (Watch Bands & Accessories)

One nylon band passes under the case, so a failed spring bar cannot drop the watch off your wrist.

Also called: pass through strap, one piece nylon strap

The basics

What to know about NATO Strap (Watch Bands & Accessories)

A single length of woven nylon threads over one spring bar, under the caseback and over the other bar, then a shorter tail flap loops back through keepers to lock the watch in place. That routing is the point. Should one spring bar fail, the band still runs beneath the case and the watch stays on your arm, where a two piece strap drops it. Hardware runs to a buckle plus two or three keeper loops, all riveted or stitched to the nylon.

Weave and thickness set the feel. Standard nylon measures 1.2 to 1.5 mm thick, and seatbelt weave is smoother and slightly denser without adding height. Because the band sits under the caseback, all of that thickness lifts the watch off your wrist. This is comfortable on a slim case and top heavy on a 14 mm dive case. Single pass versions skip the second layer and remove that lift, giving up the backup security. Holes are the giveaway for quality, since heat sealed holes hold their edges for years and punched ones fray into ovals inside months. Bar tack stitching at the buckle is what keeps hardware attached under load.

Leather dies in the conditions this band shrugs off and cannot be washed at all. Rubber matches it for water and reads more serious on a dive watch. A steel bracelet lasts a decade longer and costs many times more. What separates nylon from every one of them is price against replaceability, since you can own six colors for less than one leather band and treat each as disposable.

Travel, summer, field watches and beaters are the natural home, and a nylon band goes in a washing machine bag when it gets grim. Lugs drilled right through make fitting far easier, because you push the bar from outside without going between case and band. Slim cases benefit most, while a thick case plus 1.5 mm of lift rocks on the wrist. Formal wear rules it out completely, as woven nylon under a suit cuff reads as sports kit.

Pull hard at the buckle to test the stitching, since a single row of thread there will let go. Run a thumb over the hole edges, as sealed edges feel glassy and cut ones feel furry. Tail length matters too, because it has to tuck under both keepers rather than flap, which for a 7 inch wrist means about 260 to 280 mm overall. Warm soapy water every few weeks keeps it usable, since salt and skin oil turn a light band stiff and gray.

Best for

When to choose this style

  • Field and tool watches suit it, since a failed spring bar cannot drop the watch when the band runs under the case.
  • Travel and summer wear reward a band you can wash in soapy water and dry in an hour.
  • Tight budgets go furthest here, as six colors cost less than one good leather band.
  • A slim case carries the extra 1.2 to 1.5 mm of lift without feeling top heavy.
  • Watches with drilled lugs are quickest to change, because you push the spring bar from outside the case.

Style comparison

NATO Strap (Watch Bands & Accessories) vs similar watch bands & accessories

  • Rubber Strap

Rubber absorbs nothing, which makes it the one band you can swim, sweat and shower in.

  • Mesh Bracelet

Woven steel mesh adjusts to any length, so it fits without removing a single link.

  • Metal Bracelet

A metal bracelet sizes by removing links, so you fit it once with a tool and then leave it alone.
