The part that touches you
A watch band is the part of the watch that touches you. This group covers every band plus the small hardware that fits, stores and winds one. Lug width rules the whole family. That figure is the gap in millimeters between the two lugs, the horns on the case that a band sits between. You read it with a ruler or a caliper across the inside of that gap. Nothing else decides whether a band fits, so a 20 mm band goes on 20 mm lugs and on nothing else. Even numbers dominate, which means 18, 20 and 22 mm are stocked everywhere while 19 and 21 mm exist and leave you hunting. Spring bars, tools, winders and boxes fill out the group, the parts nobody photographs until one fails.
Spring bars and lugs
Hardware explains most of the behavior here. A spring bar is a small steel tube with a coil spring inside and a shouldered tip poking out of each end, and those tips press into holes drilled in the lugs. Standard diameter runs 1.78 mm on most watches, 1.5 mm on slim dress lugs and 2 mm or more on dive cases. A bar has to match the hole as well as the width. A quick release bar adds a tiny knurled lever on the underside: slide it with a fingernail, one tip retracts, and a swap takes ten seconds with no tool at all. Taper is the next number to read, since a band that starts at 20 mm and narrows to 16 mm at the buckle weighs less and dresses up better than one running straight through at 20. Closures split three ways: a pin buckle pushes a tongue through a hole, a deployant clasp folds the band into itself so leather never bends around your wrist bone, and a fold over clasp on a metal bracelet usually carries three to five micro adjustment holes covering roughly 4 to 8 mm.
Sweat sorts the field
Match the band to the week you actually have, and sweat sorts the field first. Leather absorbs it, and salt breaks down the fibers and the stitching from the inside. So a band worn daily through a hot summer lasts twelve to eighteen months where the same band in a dry office lasts several years. Rubber absorbs nothing, making it the only choice for swimming, showering and the gym. Nylon soaks through, dries in an hour and washes in soapy water, which is why it travels well. Steel handles everything except a hot day against skin, where it holds heat and sticks. Formality then reorders the list, because a metal bracelet or a smooth leather band passes at a wedding, mesh reads formal on a thin dress case. Nylon or rubber reads as sports kit in any room with a written dress code.
What each material collects
Nothing here comes free. Rubber survives water and collects lint, dust and pet hair the moment the watch leaves your arm. Steel outlasts every other band by a decade and adds 60 to 80 grams, which feels like quality in the shop and like weight by four in the afternoon. Nylon passing under the caseback lifts the watch 1.2 to 1.5 mm off your wrist, enough to make a thick case feel top heavy. Convenience costs strength at the lug, since a quick release bar hangs the watch on a thinner shoulder than a plain one. Storage carries its own bill: a glass topped box near a window fades dials and hardens rubber, and a cheap winder motor sits close enough that stray magnetism sends an accurate watch minutes fast.

A handful of counter tests settle quality. Bend a leather band double at its middle, since full grain creases and springs back, while bonded leather, which is shredded scrap glued to a backing, cracks along the fold and splits there inside a year. Hold a metal bracelet by the clasp and let it hang, because a solid one drapes in a smooth curve and a folded one, stamped from thin sheet, falls in stiff angles and pinches arm hair at the joints. Squeeze the endlinks, the pieces joining a bracelet to the case, and treat a visible gap there as the flaw you will stare at forever. Count the micro adjustment positions inside the clasp, as a bracelet with none fits at nine in the morning and bites at nine at night. Buy a forked spring bar tool with a hardened replaceable tip, because a soft fork splays open and skates across your caseback.
A few minutes a month
Keeping all of it alive costs a few minutes a month. Two bands in rotation roughly double the life of both, since leather needs a full day to dry and nylon holds salt until you wash it. Rinse rubber and steel in fresh water after the sea or a pool, then dry the gap where the band meets the lugs. This is exactly where salt crystals sit and cut the finish. Measure lug width before anything else: close a caliper on the inside gap between the lugs, or lay a ruler across it, and buy that exact number in millimeters. Guessing by eye is how a 22 mm band ends up jammed into 20 mm lugs and bows in the middle.
Wrap a tape around your wrist. Standard band lengths of 115 mm on the tail side and 75 mm on the buckle side suit 6.5 to 7.5 inches, while under 6.5 inches wants a short length and above 8 inches wants an extra long, so the tail neither runs past the second keeper nor falls short of the first.
Buckle a new band on the middle hole, not the last one. That leaves adjustment in both directions as your wrist swells through a hot day, and it keeps the tail length neat.
Size a metal bracelet late in the afternoon and leave enough play to slide it about half an inch along your wrist. Fitted tight on a cool morning, the same bracelet bites by evening.
Compare the taper against the buckle you own. A band tapering 20 mm to 16 mm needs a 16 mm buckle and a straight 20 mm band needs a 20 mm one, so a spare buckle only transfers between bands of matching tail width.
Boxes and winders want the widest point of your watch head plus a fully extended bracelet measured first. Cushions run about 45 to 55 mm across, and a large bracelet stretched over a small cushion stays stretched.

Keep leather away from water entirely and wipe the underside at the end of a hot day, because sweat salt rots the stitching from the inside long before the top surface looks worn.
Wash nylon in warm soapy water every few weeks and air dry it flat. Salt and skin oil build up in the weave, which is what turns a light band stiff and gray.
After sea or pool swimming, rinse rubber and steel in fresh water and dry the lug gap, since salt dries into crystals there and cuts a fine scratch line around the case.
Swap spring bars in pairs every twelve to eighteen months if you change bands often, as the spring tires with each compression and a failure drops the watch with no warning at all.
Lay a strip of masking tape over the lug area before using a spring bar tool. One slip of the fork leaves a scratch down the case side that no polish fully removes.

What is a quick release spring bar and is it worth it?

Which watch band is best for sweating and the gym?

Nylon is the cheap alternative, since it dries fast and goes in soapy water. Leather is the wrong answer here: sweat salt rots the stitching from inside and a heavily worn summer band gives out inside twelve to eighteen months.
Can I shorten a metal bracelet myself?
Usually, and the link sides tell you how. Screw pins take a 1.4 to 1.6 mm screwdriver and want a drop of thread lock on refitting or they walk loose. Pin driven links stamp a small arrow on one side showing the push direction, and those need a pin pusher and a block. Take links evenly from both sides so the clasp stays centered.
Do I actually need a watch winder?
Only for calendar complications. A perpetual or annual calendar takes real time to reset, so keeping it running saves that work. For a plain automatic showing time and date, twenty seconds of winding and setting each morning does the same job for nothing. If you buy one, choose programmable turns per day, usually 650 to 1000, and a bidirectional setting.
Will a NATO strap fit any watch?
Almost any, with two checks. Lug clearance has to let the nylon pass beneath the caseback, which fixed bars and some heavily curved lug designs prevent. Case height is the second issue, since the band adds 1.2 to 1.5 mm underneath and lifts the watch, and a thick case on top of that rocks. Through drilled lugs make the change much easier.
Why does my leather band smell after a few months?
Sweat soaks into the underside, and the bacteria feeding on it produce the odor. Wiping the skin side at the end of each day slows it. Rotating two bands so each dries fully for 24 hours slows it further. Once the smell is set into the fibers, no cleaner reliably removes it, so treat the band as a wear item.
Is a leather strap or a metal bracelet better for a first watch?
Leather if the watch is thin and the wear is mostly indoors, since it costs less to replace and adds no weight.
