Pearl Earrings
Glue holds the pearl on a cup instead of prongs, and that joint decides how long it lasts.
Also called: pearl studs, pearl drops
The basics
What to know about Pearl Earrings
Pearl earrings put a drilled bead where a stone would normally sit, and the difference matters more than it looks. A pearl is drilled part way through and seated on a small cup at the top of a post with adhesive. There are no prongs, because prongs would need a hole all the way through and metal pressure would crack the nacre, the layered coating that gives a pearl its shine.
That adhesive joint is the whole engineering question. Good work seats the pearl flush against the cup with no glue visible and runs the post straight through the drill hole, so the pearl faces forward instead of sitting at an angle. Sizing follows a simple rule: 6 to 7 mm reads as everyday, 8 to 9 mm reads as formal, and past 10 mm the weight starts pulling on the lobe. Drops trade a longer post for movement and swing against the jaw.
Diamond studs are held by metal in prongs or a bezel and can be cleaned aggressively. Pearls cannot, since heat, ultrasonic vibration and solvents attack the surface and the glue at the same time. A pearl strand shares the material and adds a real maintenance job in the silk thread, where earrings have no thread to fail. Put beside a mismatched set or a climber, pearls sit still and read traditional. This is precisely why they clear dress codes those styles do not.
Interviews, weddings, funerals and any workplace with an unwritten rule are the natural home, and a white 7 mm stud suits nearly every age and skin tone. Keep pearls out of the gym, the pool and anywhere you spray product on your head. Freshwater pearls cost a fraction of akoya, the cultured saltwater type, and read almost identically at stud size. This is the route on a small budget.
Examine where the pearl meets the metal under a bright light, since a visible bead of glue or a gap means the two will separate. Roll the pair against each other and feel for slight grit, which real nacre has and coated glass does not. Wipe each pearl with a soft damp cloth after wearing, then store the pair away from harder stones that scratch them.

A decorative back slides on behind the lobe so the earring shows on both sides of the ear.
