Ear Climber (Earrings)

An ear climber is a single curved bar that starts at a standard lobe piercing and sweeps upward along the outer edge of the ear. The visual result is a graduated line of stones or metal climbing the ear, which normally takes three or four separate piercings to achieve. Here it comes from one.

The post sits at the bottom end of the bar rather than in the middle. Everything above the piercing is cantilevered and held only by the curve resting against your ear. That is why the arc has to match your ear shape. Too straight and the tip stands away from your head. Too curved and it digs in. Left and right are shaped as mirrors of each other and cannot be swapped. Some designs add a small hook or a second post at the top to hold the tip down, which solves the standing-off problem outright.

An ear cuff clamps onto cartilage without any piercing and can be repositioned at will. A climber is anchored in the lobe and its position is fixed by the curve. Front-back styles extend behind and below the lobe, occupying the opposite direction entirely. One lobe piercing plus a wish for the multi-pierced look is the exact case this solves, and hair worn up shows the whole sweep. Ears that curve sharply, or lobes that sit tight against the head, often will not take a climber cleanly. There is no adjusting a cast curve. Long loose hair is the other problem, because the raised tip snags every time you push your hair back.

Try one against your ear in the store and look in a mirror from the side, not the front, since standing-off only shows in profile. Solid cast bar beats thin bent wire, which loses its shape after a few wearings and cannot be bent back accurately. Give the pair a fitted slot rather than a loose box, because a flattened climber never sits right again.
