Women's Push-Up (Bras)
Angled pads sit under and outside the breast to lift it up and push it toward the center.
Also called: padded lift bra, gel bra
The basics
What to know about Women's Push-Up (Bras)
Padding placed low and to the outside of the cup is what defines a push-up. That geometry matters far more than the amount of foam: the pad wedges under the breast and angles inward. That is why tissue moves up and toward the middle instead of simply being covered.
Levels are usually sold as light, regular and full, and they describe pad thickness at the base of the cup rather than anywhere else. Cups sit shallower at the top edge than on other bras. That makes room for what the pad has pushed up. Straps are set closer to the neck so they stay hidden inside a narrow neckline. Removable pads let you drop a level on days when you want less.
Neighboring styles reach their look by different routes. Balconettes lift from below with no added volume and leave the top of the breast bare across a straight line. Plunge bras open the center without adding anything, so depth comes from angle. Where a t-shirt bra spreads a thin, even layer of foam through the whole cup for smoothness, a push-up loads all of it at the bottom. The two feel nothing alike on.
Smaller cups gain the most, because there is room inside the cup for tissue to move. Above a D, the same pad usually forces flesh over the top edge and prints a double line under a knit top. Across a full working day the constant upward pressure gets tiring. That is why many people keep push-ups for evenings, open necklines and photographs rather than the office.
Run a finger along the top of the cup. No flesh should sit above the fabric edge, and the wire should follow your ribcage without gapping at the outer end. Machine drying ruins the pad, which flattens and never recovers, so squeeze the water out in a towel and dry it flat. Pads that have gone lumpy cannot be reshaped, and at that point the bra is finished even if the fabric looks new.
Best for
When to choose this style
- Open necklines gain visible center shape, which is exactly what the angled pad creates.
- Wide-set breasts read closer together once the cups push inward.
- Evenings suit it better than working days, because constant upward pressure tires.
- Smaller cups change the most, since the cup has room to move tissue into.

Wireless
Support comes from a firm band and shaped seams rather than a metal wire under the cup.
Balconette & Demi
Cups are cut straight across near the top of the breast, with straps set wide at the outer edge.
T-Shirt Bra
Molded foam cups leave no seam on the surface, so nothing prints through a fitted knit top.
