Women's Plunge (Bras)

What defines a plunge is the gore, the small piece of fabric joining the two cups over the breastbone. On this cut it can measure under half an inch tall against an inch or more on most bras. That missing height is what lets a deep neckline stay empty.

Cups tilt toward each other in a V, wires run steeply from a low center up to a high outer end, and straps sit close to the neck. Because the middle gives up structure, the sides take it on. A good plunge has firm outer panels and taller wings, the sections of fabric running from cup to hook. Padding may or may not be present, since the effect comes from angle rather than volume.

Balconettes tackle the same problem from the opposite direction, keeping the center intact and cutting the top straight across. Push-up bras add foam under the breast, while a plunge moves the breast inward without adding anything. So the result reads as depth rather than height. Smoothing is where it loses to a t-shirt bra, since the cup is seamed toward the middle instead of molded in one piece.

Wrap dresses, deep V knits and shirts worn with three buttons open all need this cut. Close-set breasts are the awkward case, because a short gore can still press or float when there is little room between them. At larger sizes a plunge holds less than a full cup does, so it belongs to the outfits that demand it rather than to the working week.

The gore still has to touch your chest even at half an inch high. A gore that floats means the cup is too small. Straps set close to the neck slip on sloped shoulders, so confirm they adjust short enough before you leave the shop. Fasten the hooks before washing, since an open hook catches lace and tears the cup edge of whatever it is sharing the bag with.
