Buy one when the television is 4K with HDR and the household subscribes to services that actually stream those formats, or when the streamer is meant to outlive the current screen. A projector owner assembling a home theater chain belongs here too, as Atmos passthrough and frame rate matching, the feature that switches output to match film at 24 frames per second, live in this tier. Owners of 1080p screens gain nothing but a chip that idles.

Its weakness is dependence on everything downstream. The formats appear only when the panel, the HDMI cable, any receiver in the middle and the subscription tier all cooperate, and one weak link quietly drops the chain to baseline HDR10 with no error shown. Check a listing for each format by name, for HDCP 2.2, the copy protection 4K services demand along the whole chain, and for AV1 decoding, then confirm your services stream 4K on your plan, since several charge extra for it.

Keep it simple in use: wire it to the network where possible, because 4K bit rates punish weak Wi-Fi hardest, and revisit picture settings after platform updates, which sometimes reset format output to safe defaults.
