Retrofit Deadbolt Adapter (Smart Locks)
Bolts over your existing thumbturn inside, leaving the outside cylinder and every key untouched.
Also called: thumbturn adapter, conversion smart lock, retrofit smart lock
The basics
What to know about Retrofit Deadbolt Adapter (Smart Locks)
Only the inside changes. The adapter clamps over the interior thumbturn of the single-cylinder deadbolt already in your door and turns it with a motor, so the exterior plate, the cylinder and every key in circulation carry on working unchanged. Installation needs a screwdriver and about 10 minutes, and nothing is drilled. That also fixes the ceiling on quality: a worn 1980s deadbolt with a half inch bolt stays a worn deadbolt with a half inch bolt, now with an app.
A Smart Deadbolt replaces the whole assembly and lets you upgrade the metal. But it changes the outside face of the door and every key. A Keypad Deadbolt asks for the same full swap. What no other style matches here is reversibility: unscrew the adapter, refit the original thumbturn, and the door is exactly as you found it. This is the renter's answer.
Renters, students and anyone on a short lease should start here, as should owners whose deadbolt is newer than the wish to control it by phone. Households that want the outside to look untouched get that for free. It will not fit a double-cylinder deadbolt with a key on both sides. It will not fit where the thumbturn sits under a decorative escutcheon or within about 1-1/2 inches of an edge, a security chain or a door frame.
Measure before anything else. You want a clear circle of roughly 2-1/2 to 3 inches around the thumbturn and 2 to 2-1/2 inches of depth behind the door face, then check the thumbturn shape against the maker's adapter list. Turn the key from outside with the adapter fitted, since some designs bind. Look for motor torque quoted for stiff locks, and check that the log records manual turns and not only app commands.
Free the old lock first: a dry graphite or PTFE lubricant in the cylinder and a clean bolt let the motor pull less current and stretch battery life by months. Oil collects grit, so leave it in the shed. Keep the original thumbturn and its screws taped inside a cupboard for the day you move out.
Best for
When to choose this style
- You rent, and the outside of the door is not yours to change.
- The existing deadbolt is sound and only the way you operate it needs to change.
- Other people hold keys to the same lock and those keys have to keep working.
- You want the entire change undone in ten minutes on the day you hand back the property.
