The basics
What to know about Membrane Keyboards
One molded silicone sheet covers the whole board. Pressing a key collapses a dome in that sheet until a carbon pad underneath bridges two traces printed on plastic film. Force builds to roughly 55 to 60 grams, the dome buckles, and your finger meets the base plate. This is the soft landing people describe as mushy. Three thin films and one rubber sheet make up the entire mechanism, so the parts count is small and so is the price.
Mechanical Keyboards separate the trigger point from the bottom of the stroke and let you swap the feel; a membrane board fixes both at the factory. Low-Profile Keyboards often use the same dome shrunk under a scissor hinge, which sharpens the action and cuts travel. Against either, this design answers with near silence, 400 to 700 grams of weight and a replacement cost nobody has to think about.
Shared workstations, reception counters, classroom computers, spares drawers and quiet offices are where the format belongs. It also fits anyone who types in short bursts between calls and paperwork rather than for hours. Avoid it if you type fast enough to outrun the dome's recovery, if you expect to change the feel later, or if the board will sit in a kitchen or workshop, since one spill through the films normally ends it.
Rated life is 5 to 10 million presses per key against 50 to 100 million on a mechanical switch, which for a heavy typist means about three years instead of fifteen. Domes also soften unevenly, so the keys you press most start feeling different from the rest well before anything stops working.
Two checks separate a decent board from a poor one. Press the space bar at its far left corner and confirm it does not bind or need a second push. Then look for a stated rollover figure of at least six keys at once, because cheap membranes share circuit traces and drop letters when your fingers overlap during fast typing.
