The basics

What to know about Mechanical Keyboards

Every key on a mechanical keyboard sits in its own housing containing a spring, a sliding stem and a pair of metal contacts, or in newer designs a magnet read by a sensor. Total travel runs about 4 mm and the key registers near the 2 mm mark, so once your fingers learn where that point sits you can type without pressing all the way down. Rated life is 50 to 100 million presses per key, about ten times what a rubber dome manages.

Feel becomes a purchase decision here, which is the whole point of the style. Linear switches glide with no interruption at around 45 grams of force and suit fast repeated presses. Tactile switches place a small bump at the trigger point, ask 55 to 65 grams, and give a typist a signal to stop pushing. Clicky switches add a noisemaker to that bump; enjoyable alone, unwelcome within earshot of anyone else. Magnetic switches let you set the trigger anywhere between roughly 0.2 and 3.5 mm and adjust it per key later.

Membrane Keyboards cost a fraction as much, weigh far less and stay quiet, at the price of a mushy landing and no way to change the feel. Low-Profile Keyboards can also be mechanical, but travel shortened to 2 or 3 mm brings them closer to a laptop in the hand. Split Ergonomic Keyboards usually run mechanical switches too, adding a posture change this style does not attempt.

Writers, programmers and anyone typing above 60 words a minute gain the most, since a consistent trigger point turns into muscle memory. Skip the style for a reception counter, a hot desk you pack up nightly, or a budget below the price of two dome boards. Weight is real: 900 g to 1.4 kg with a metal plate inside, which reads as stability on a desk and dead load in a bag.

Hot-swap sockets, which take switches by pressing them in rather than soldering, turn a wrong choice into a 20 minute correction. Listen to the space bar and shift keys before committing, because loose stabilizers under the long keys rattle and rarely improve. Caps molded in PBT resist the shine that softer ABS develops within a year of daily use.

  • The keyboard lives on one desk where a kilogram of weight keeps it from sliding.
  • You share the room and will choose a quiet linear or tactile switch over a clicky one.
