Instant Cameras

An Instant Camera exposes a sheet of self developing film and pushes it out through rollers that burst a pod of chemistry across the layers. The picture builds over roughly 90 seconds. Three film sizes cover almost the whole market: a credit card format with an image near 46 by 62 mm, a square around 62 by 62 mm, and a wide format near 62 by 99 mm. Hybrid models add a small digital sensor and a screen so you pick which frames to print instead of printing every shutter press.

Nothing else in this category works this way. A Compact Camera gives you thousands of free frames and no object at the end of the evening. A phone paired with a pocket printer separates capture from printing and costs less per print. What the instant camera sells is one physical copy made in front of the person in it. It turns up at weddings and parties rather than on trips where quality decides. Judge it as a social object rather than as a camera.

It suits parties, guest books, classrooms, scrapbooks and gifts. Film sensitivity is high at around ISO 800, but the lens is slow and fixed focus from about 0.6 m. The built in flash does most of the work indoors and anything past 3 m falls into darkness. Skip it if you want control, if the pictures must be sharp, or if you shoot often, because the film is the real price. A pack of ten costs a meaningful fraction of the camera. Regular use spends more on packs in a year than the body cost.

Look for exposure compensation, a close up mode and a tripod thread, since those three turn a toy into something you can actually direct. Keep film between about 5 and 40 C and never leave a pack in a car, because heat spoils the chemistry pods before you load them. Let a print develop face down in shade rather than shaking it, which achieves nothing and can smear the layers. Wipe the rollers with a damp cloth when white streaks appear down a print, and pull the batteries if the camera is going into a drawer for months.
