Eye Cream (Skincare)
Eye cream is a low-strength moisturizer built for skin that is far thinner than the rest of the face.
Also called: eye gel, eye serum
The basics
What to know about Eye Cream (Skincare)
Skin around the eye runs roughly a third to a half as thick as facial skin, carries fewer oil glands and moves thousands of times a day, which is why this category exists at all. Formulas are gentler, lighter and usually fragrance-free, with active concentrations dialed down rather than up.
Texture is deliberately different from a face cream, since most eye products are light emulsions that absorb fast, because a heavy occlusive around the eye migrates into it and causes puffiness and stinging. Caffeine appears constantly for a simple reason: it constricts blood vessels and reduces morning puffiness for a few hours. Peptides and low-dose retinal are the ingredients working on crepey texture across months. Light-reflecting pigments in some formulas do something purely cosmetic and immediate, which is worth knowing so nobody mistakes it for a lasting change.
Face moisturizer can usually stand in, and for many people it should, since a fragrance-free cream taken up to the orbital bone does the same work. Strong face serums are the opposite decision, because a full-strength active around the eye is how people give themselves red, flaking lids. Eye patches are the same idea in miniature, useful for an hour of de-puffing before an event and little else.
Puffy mornings caused by salt, alcohol or sleep position respond to caffeine plus a cool applicator, so a metal-tipped tube earns its cost. Circles caused by thin skin showing the blood vessels beneath will not change with any cream, though hydration softens how they read, while pigment-based ones lighten slowly under vitamin C or a low-strength retinoid. Lens wearers and easily irritated eyes need fragrance-free formulas placed on the orbital bone rather than near the lashes. If money is tight, buy sunscreen before eye cream, since sun exposure causes most of what people try to treat here.
A grain of rice per eye is enough, tapped in with a ring finger, which presses lightly by nature, rather than dragged across the skin. Place it along the orbital bone, the ridge you can feel about a centimeter below the lash line, since body heat carries the product upward on its own. Puffiness claims prove themselves within a week and texture claims within three months, and anything that stings should be stopped, because this area has no margin for irritation.
Best for
When to choose this style
- Morning puffiness eases with caffeine and a cool metal applicator.
- Crepey lids firm slowly on peptides or a low-strength retinal made for the eye.
- Reactive eyes need fragrance-free, since fragrance is a common cause of lid dermatitis.
- Light emulsions stay where you put them, which matters for anyone wearing contact lenses.
Style comparison
Eye Cream (Skincare) vs similar skincare
Serum
A serum delivers one active at a working concentration in a thin base, so it goes on before anything heavier.
Face Mask
A mask holds a high dose against the skin for a set time, which is how it does more than a daily step.
Moisturizer
A moisturizer holds water in the skin, using humectants, emollients and occlusives in different ratios.
