Two tool families share one mechanism here. Straighteners close two flat heated plates on a section. Curling irons wrap a section around a single heated barrel, either with a clamp holding the end or bare, in which case the tool is called a wand and you hold the end yourself. Both heat hair past the point where the weak bonds inside a strand release, then let it cool in the new position. Cooling is when the shape actually sets, which is why touching a fresh curl while it is warm drops it straight.

Surface material decides behavior. Ceramic coating spreads heat evenly and forgives a slow pass, but it wears through after a few years and the bare metal underneath begins to drag. Titanium reaches temperature fastest and holds it under load, which suits coarse hair and punishes fine hair. Size does the rest. Plates around 1 inch handle most lengths, narrower plates reach a fringe or short layers. 1.5 to 2 inch plates cover long thick hair in fewer passes. On a barrel, diameter is curl size. 3/4 inch gives ringlets, 1 inch a classic curl, and 1.25 inch and up gives a wave that fine hair drops by evening.

Hair Dryers move heated air and lose most of that temperature before it lands, so they shape only through tension. An iron delivers its full set temperature straight into the strand through metal. That direct contact is why it must never meet damp hair and why one careless pass does what an entire blow dry cannot. Nothing else in this group holds a shape after you put the tool down.

Coarse, thick or stubbornly straight hair suits an iron worked around 380 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Fine, bleached or color treated hair belongs at 300 to 330 with one pass only. A 1 inch straightener will also curl if you turn the wrist, though looser than a barrel gives. Skip a flat iron if you air dry and wear your own texture, because a wand adds to what you have while a straightener erases it.

A digital number beats low, medium and high, because a setting you cannot read is a setting you cannot repeat. Close the plates on a strip of paper and pull: it should grip at both ends, not just the middle. Plates that float slightly on their mounts stop the tool grabbing halfway down. Wipe cold plates with a damp cloth, because hairspray residue bakes onto the surface and transfers back as a sticky drag.
