What to know about Convection Panel Heater
A Convection Panel Heater draws cool air in at the bottom of a flat case, passes it over an element inside and lets it rise out of vents along the top. Nothing is aimed at you and very little radiates. That is why the purpose is a slow, even background temperature rather than a warm spot to stand in. Output runs from 400 to 2,000 watts depending on the local voltage, and many models are built to hang on a wall permanently.
Set beside a Micathermic Heater, which shares the slim shape, this one radiates less and depends more on the air column it creates, so it evens out a room better and warms a person standing in front of it less. An Oil-Filled Radiator does the same convection job with stored heat and far more weight. A Ceramic Heater wins on speed and loses on noise. Low wattage versions sold for a hallway or a conservatory are meant to run steadily at 400 to 700 watts rather than blast.
Hallways connecting cold rooms, a conservatory, a home office you sit in all day and any room where an even temperature matters more than fast heat all suit it. Avoid it when you want quick warmth, since a cold room takes 30 to 45 minutes to feel different. Avoid it in a very drafty space too, because moving air breaks up the convection column it depends on. Do not mount it under a window sill or a shelf, where rising heat has nowhere to go.
Read what the thermostat actually does, because this style lives or dies on it. Electronic control holding within 1 degree is common now. A mechanical dial swinging 5 degrees is not adequate for an appliance meant to run for hours. A weekly programmer and open window detection, which cuts output when room temperature drops suddenly, both shorten running time in a measurable way. Check the depth, since 3 inches or less passes a hallway cleanly, and confirm a wall bracket is in the box. A bathroom version must carry a splash rating for that room.
Vacuum the bottom intake slots and the top vents twice a season, because the airflow through this design is gentle and blocks easily. Keep everything combustible three feet away and give the top vents at least the clearance the manual states, since blocked vents stall the air column and heat builds inside the case. On a wall mounted unit, check the fixings once a year. Browning around the top vents means air is not moving and something is restricting the intake.
