Ductless Mini-Split (Air Conditioners)
An outdoor compressor connected to one or more indoor units.
Also called: ductless heat pump, split air conditioner
The basics
What to know about Ductless Mini-Split (Air Conditioners)
A Ductless Mini-Split separates an outdoor compressor and coil from one or more indoor air handlers connected by refrigerant tubing, wiring and a condensate drain. Each indoor unit recirculates room air without a central duct system. Many models reverse the refrigeration cycle to provide heat as well as cooling. Variable-speed operation can match output to changing load, improving comfort and humidity control when equipment is correctly selected and commissioned.
A Window Air Conditioner and Portable Air Conditioner package everything for one room with less initial work but more indoor noise and lower long-term refinement. Central Air uses ducts to serve the home through shared equipment and registers. A multi-zone mini-split lets indoor units operate by room, though all connect to outdoor capacity and may not deliver every zone's peak demand simultaneously. It saves duct losses but introduces visible wall, ceiling or floor units and several condensate paths.
Homes without ducts, additions, converted spaces and households wanting zone control are strong candidates. Avoid choosing indoor-unit count and outdoor capacity from floor area alone; room load, climate, exposure, insulation and heating performance matter. A poorly oversized system can cycle or control humidity badly. Very cold or hot design conditions require verified output at those temperatures. Owners who dislike visible indoor heads should examine concealed or ceiling options along with their service-access needs.
A qualified designer should calculate loads, choose matched equipment, plan line lengths, drain routes, electrical service and outdoor placement, then commission refrigerant and airflow. Compare efficiency and heating capacity at local conditions, low-fan noise, filtration, defrost behavior, controls and service network. Confirm whether each room can maintain its own set point without conflicts. Outdoor clearances, corrosion exposure, condensate disposal and future access must be solved before installation, not hidden behind finish work.
Wash or replace indoor filters on schedule, keep coils and drains clear and maintain open air around the outdoor unit. Do not block a wall head with tall furniture or curtains. Watch for water stains, ice, reduced airflow and new noise, arranging qualified service rather than opening the refrigerant circuit. Keep outdoor snow, leaves and debris away within the stated clearance. Clean professional components at the recommended interval, update connected controls securely and retain commissioning records for future diagnosis.
Best for
When to choose this style
- Homes and additions without usable central ductwork.
- Room-by-room cooling and heating with independent indoor units.
- Spaces needing quiet operation after professional load design and installation.
- Renovations that can route refrigerant lines, power and condensate correctly.
