Structure defines this one, not fiber. Waffle knitting builds a grid of raised squares with hollows between them. Each hollow holds a pocket of still air roughly an eighth of an inch deep. Because warmth is trapped air, that texture buys real insulation for very little weight. The pattern has been the standard look of thermal underwear for a century.

Cotton or a cotton and polyester blend is what most versions are knitted from, and the blend ratio predicts how the garment behaves better than the price does. Around the house, on school runs, in drafty rooms and under jeans on a dry cold day, this is a comfortable and cheap answer. Skiing, hiking and any work that raises a sweat are where it belongs least, and the outdoor rule against cotton applies here in full.

Look at the cuff and hem construction before anything else, since a waffle set nearly always fails there. A ribbed cuff knitted separately holds its shape where a self-hemmed waffle edge flares within a season. Check for a stated preshrunk or sanforized finish. That means the cloth was compressed before cutting, because untreated cotton loses length on the first hot wash. Wash warm rather than hot and dry on low, as heat flattens the raised squares and takes the trapped air with them.
